1.30pm - EZ HELLARD & THE DJUKELLA ORCHESTRA

Jez Hellard

Jez Hellard is a singer of potent songs, fine guitarist and simply stunning harmonica player. His band, The Djukella Orchestra, play traditional and contemporary folk music, from jigs, reels and rebel ballads to tango, rhumba and even reggae. Featuring one of the most captivating double-bassists you're likely to see and some of the finest instrumentalists on the UK scene, their blend of virtuoso musicianship, witty political comment and a deep repertoire of powerful songs never fails to turn heads. Since hitting the road full time in 2005, Jez has played well over a thousand gigs; from the Glastonbury Festival to the Kispiox Valley, New York to Taipei, Istanbul to the Iberian Peninsular, gaining fans far and wide.

The word Djukella is a common insult in the Balkans, meaning mongrel, and goes some way to describe the mixed provenance both of the music and the musicians themselves. Nye Parsons is a virtuoso double-bassist with a lyrical style which'll have you craning your neck for a better view. He's played with countless bands over a 30 year career and has worked with Jez since 2006.

Fiddlers James Patrick Gavin & Julie Rands-Allen from England, Alaistair Caplin from the Isle of Lewis, Zoe Moffat and Cam Neufeld from Canada provide the top end, sometimes one at a time, sometimes two, depending on logistics. Jordan Kostov is a renowned Macedonian accordionist and composer, from Kavadarci, who has worked with bands and orchestras across Europe.

2.30pm - TOBIAS BEN JACOB & LUKAS DRINKWATER

Tobias Ben Jacob & Lukas Drinkwater

Tobias Ben Jacob
Devon based Singer-Songwriter Tobias ben Jacob has been recently lauded by BBC 6’s Tom Robinson and this Spring has seen airplay for new single Burning Low on national radio including BBC Radio 2, BBC6, Amazing Radio, BBC Introducing, BBC Bristol, Blues & Roots and FRUK as well as being described by R2: Rock n Reel Magazine as ‘inventive and thrilling’ and doing a session for legendary broadcaster Whispering Bob Harris’ ‘Under The Apple Tree Sessions’.

Tobias’ live show is a dynamic and emotionally charged affair, ranging from high-crystalline falsetto led tracks like ‘We Are The First Ones Now’ to more driving riff-driven earthy numbers like ‘I Breathe In Life.’ He also plays in a duo with upright bass player and singer Lukas Drinkwater. The pair released the double A -side ‘Burning Low/Autosong’ on Folkstock Records in March and have an EP due for release in the summer. The duo played their first gig together at Glastonbury 2014 and have been captivating audiences on the UK festival and acoustic scene since.

Some of Tobias’ career highlights to date have included performing live on air at BBC’s Maida Vale Studios for ‘Late Junction’ on Radio 3, recording music in Nashville, Tennessee and in Livingstone Studios, London, as well as touring many UK venues and festivals including Glastonbury, Green Man, Secret Garden Party, Somersault, Larmer Tree and Electric Picnic. Prior to going solo Tobias played in ‘The Roots Union’ alongside Folk Award winners Phillip Henry & Hannah Martin.

Lukas Drinkwater
Lukas Drinkwater is a session musician based in Exeter, UK. Specialising in double bass, electric bass, vocals and guitar, Lukas has quickly become one of the most in-demand session musicians on the touring circuit, working with some of the biggest names in folk & jazz.

Currently touring as a solo performer, as part of a duo with acclaimed acoustic troubadour Tobias ben Jacob, with European festival favourites Tankus the Henge, and as a duo with BBC Folk Award nominee Ange Hardy – Lukas, rightly earns his title as one of the busiest musicians in the UK.

3.45pm - JAMES LADD & MARIE LISTER

James Ladd & Marie Lister

This beautifully matched duo of vocalists is inspired by classic soul and R’n’B as much as the easy-rolling blues of the New Orleans backstreets. Marie Lister’s 'Echoes of Old Soul' vocals, catch the timeless quality of that ancestral funk sound and are reflected in James Ladd’s rootsy songs and ear-grabbing guitar work, with some crowd-pleasing cover versions just adding to their soulful credentials.

James is part of the Open Source Music network in Bristol. He is a unique guitarist who creates an eclectic and original blend of funk, jazz, soul and folk and has been heavily active within the Southwest music scene, collaborating with a large number of other artists including Cut Collective, Sheelanagig and No Go Stop. Marie also features in No Go Stop as well as The Duval Project.

5.00pm - RIK FOOT & TORI REED

Rick Foot

Double bassist and singer-songwriter Rick Foot comes from a background in abstract improvisation and jazz, and his melodic lines and inventive technical approach to his instrument make him an instantly recognisable presence. He has worked extensively in jazz and free improvisation with many different musicians in the UK, Holland and Spain, including Evan Parker, Lol Coxhill, Harry Beckett, Chris Biscoe, Sarah Gail Brand, Henry Lowther and John Law.

Rick regularly works with Arnie Cottrell, Jo Long, Eva Abraham, Tori Reed, Nancy Kerr's Sweet Visitor band and Australian roots guitarist Derrin Nauendorf, and has recorded with Luke Daniels and John Dipper, touring with Luke, as well as with Jon Boden and the Remnant Kings.

He has recorded two albums of Lorca poems fashioned into songs, and eight years' relentless touring with singer/guitarist Keith James, playing Nick Drake, John Martyn, Lorca and Keith's songs. He led Mingus-repertoire band On The Corner for ten years, including two chaotic tours with saxophonists Dick Heckstall-Smith and Ed Jones and a long-running abstract improvising trio with Steve McDade and the late Simon Reeve. He also toured with Janos Lang's Anglo-Hungarian celtic band Fianna and celtic band Broderick.

Tori Reed's music goes from finger picking folk, through to jazz influenced beats, a dusting of country and vocals that could be soul. It's music that will touch hearts, get toes tapping and leave you wanting more. Born in New Zealand, raised in Australia, and having done a lot of travel, Tori has difficulty naming one place home. This affinity with being on the road has manifested itself in many songs and undoubtedly, being a wandering spirit, will do in many more.

Tori has performed alongside the likes of folk great Martin Carthy, blues master Lloyd Spiegel and folk artist Tecoma, plus many more. From local Antipodean gigs, to far flung performances in Israel; tiny peña's in Argentina to large stages at charity events in Tasmania; big stages, small pubs, Tori has had the fortune to entertain and share stories with musicians and audiences from all over the world. With her unique style and endearing arrangements, Tori is well suited to intimate crowds and caring environments. Every song is aimed at touching the hearts and minds of those listening. Her second album, "The Snug Sessions", was released in 2017.
