Hannah Johnson and The Broken Hearts
The evolution of any band with a history going back fifteen years can read like an Almanac of triumphal events as well as a diary of disappointments and frustration – such is the music business! The Toy Hearts’ hiatus is not an occasion for retrospective contemplation, but an exciting time of new opportunities. Hannah and Stewart Johnson are excited and proud to announce their new project: ‘Hannah Johnson and the Broken Hearts’.
Without wading in the quagmire of debate about what is and what defines ‘Americana Music’, The Broken Hearts seek to reveal the music that used to be called ‘COUNTRY’ in the impassioned era of Honky Tonk: when musicians sought only to play the best music possible and get folks up dancing, (in proud defiance of an industry which today only seeks to dilute and enable the mediocre and banal.) The material is a celebration of Honky Tonk, classic ‘old’ country, western swing, blues and standards with original songs written in these genres.
The line up of The Broken Hearts consists of:
The band is fronted by Hannah Johnson - Lead Vocals, Mandolin and Guitar.
Hannah Johnson’s singing career started at the age of 16. Having grown up in a musical family, she was heavily influenced by the American roots music her father played to her as a child and so helped form their Birmingham based family band during the early 2000s. Throughout her fifteen-year career with ‘The Toy Hearts’ the trio’s accolades include touring the length and breadth of the UK, Ireland, Europe and USA. The band have opened for prestigious acts such as Robert Plant, Imelda May, Chris Thile, Kitty, Daisy & Lewis, Ricky Skaggs, Tim O’Brien, Peter Rowan and Gene Watson to name but a few.
Hannah is a graduated alumni member of ‘The International Bluegrass Music Association’s, Leadership Bluegrass Program’, which she was selected for in 2009 and travelled to Nashville, Tennessee to proudly participate in. Highlights of her personal career include being invited onstage to sing with rockabilly sensation Imelda May, country royalty Georgette Jones, Austin legend Ms. Toni Price and Texas award winning band, The Jitterbug Vipers.
The Toy Hearts have received significant national press over the years, recorded live sessions for BBC Radio 2 and can count among their fans Ronnie Wood, Robert Plant and BBC broadcasting veteran Bob Harris.
Having made five recordings with The Toy Hearts, Hannah is excited to be recording her debut solo album with her band ‘Hannah Johnson and The Broken Hearts’ in early 2016.
